Now that prices of their commodities are cheaper than ever, identity thieves may do just about anything to cover more ground.
From $30 in 1998, an ill-gotten credit card has come to fetch for just $3 nowadays. It can even be had for as low as 40 cents. Comprehensive identity profiles, which encompass social security numbers, ATM PIN numbers, and credit information, sell for only $10 each.
Consumers’ complacency has the priciest tag, though; people still must own up to the skyrocketing costs of losing identity data.
In light of all these, identity thieves are not unknown to wait until market prices rise yet again. For instance, the infiltrators in the Montgomery Ward flap stole data as early as 2007, but only traded the data late next year. For many thieves, the mantra has been either wait-and-seeor-work-even-harder.
In 2007, thieves spirited away $8.5 million in identity information from the Fidelity National Information Services. It was a record in the history of identity theft.
The Affinion Security Center, of the eponymous conglomerate, has a first-hand vista of the underground market. On occasion, Affinion produces mock identity data, if only to identify the individuals and groups that use them. In the wake of the Montgomery Ward security compromise, Affinion was able to uncover the identities of the thieves, who were about to sell $10,000 worth of credit cards.
One of Affinion’s services leverages algorithmic sequences in computers to scour black market “forums” for compromised identities.

There is a possibility of swine flu becoming a pandemic in the next few months. The disease has not been much heard of in recent past; however, according to a prediction, there is a chance that around 33% of the population will eventually be affected by it.
This could lead to significant absenteeism in offices, which is a worrying scenario considering that employers are already facing problems because of the recession. If the disease outbreak does materialise as many predict, it is estimated that it would cost £1.5 billion every day to the UK economy.
Therefore, it is important for the employers to make sure that their employees do not fall a victim to the disease. It has been advised that they ensure proper and regular health checks and provide the right kind of facilities to their employees.
Rowlands Solicitors has been also offering other advice for the employers to follow in such a situation. Its Head of Employment, William O’Neill, said that to reduce the chances of an outbreak of swine flu the owners should make sure that their employees are aware of the symptoms and are able to recognize if they develop them. As soon as the employees develop the symptoms, they should take a leave and see a medical practitioner.
The owners should also ensure proper sanitation and hygiene in the office. The suggestions for personal hygiene include use of hand sanitizers and clean tissues, proper disposal of waste etc. Mr. O’Neill also suggested that the employees could choose to wear face masks, though there is question mark on how effective they would be.
In spite of this, if swine flu becomes widespread in the organisation, the owners should try to reduce their losses. They should estimate the risk and see how they can ensure proper working of their organisation in spite of many workers being ill. To cut down the risk to healthy employees, they can allow them to continue working through electronic media from the office or from home to ensure that the work is done but the disease does not spread.
Keep up-to-date with health and safety regulations that can save employees from serious injury and avoid court procedures that can cost companies many thousands of pounds. Visit the Workplace Law website and find out about the range of cdm courses for information about how your company can avoid falling foul of health and safety legalities.

If you look at a typical Chinese urban center, you will see dozens, perhaps 100s, of cranes raising skyscrapers. The primary constituent in the construction of such edifices is steel. Steel structures are the backbone of every metropolis.
Before a building can be constructed, it has to be planned. And this is where the detailing of steel structures comes into play. Structural detailing design is essential to the safety of everybody involved – those labouring on the construction site, and those finally inhabiting the building. A huge amount of preparation is essential in order to satisfy safety ordinances while fulfilling all the specs the client and architect have defined.
A steel drafter must know everything about force and pressure – allowing the structure to yield to outside forces, and when to withstand such forces, to maximise the unity of the construction. A structure must also resist great weights, so this is another issue the detailer must deal with. From the weight of snow to the speed of wind, a steel structure detailer must plan for all kinds of external pressures.
In these modern times, there’s a greater requirement for creative design, meaning the detailer can frequently find himself working on tricky designs and attempt to translate them into a secure living space for hundreds of individuals.
All the same, it’s not all bad for the detailer – software packages like AutoCad, Asteel and Tekla Steel have helped hurry up the process of drafting and detailing large buildings.
