Have you looked at those little round objects bound to the ceiling and marveled how they work and detect smoke? We see them every day, however a large majority of us dont know how fire alarm systems operate. While were babbling of warning signals, do you know that a small nuclear reaction happen inside that little rounded object? Let’s find out how it these fire sensors function.
Currently, we have two types of smoke detectors. The most common is the ionisation detector. They work better than the other type which is the photoelectric sensor. In addition, ionization sensors are low-cost and need tiny space when put in.
ionisation Detector
The ionization detector utilizes two plates with opposite voltages and a little measure of Americium-241. A cell ordinarily powers this voltage and are encased in a metal chamber where air can course freely. The actual body of chamber works as the negative plate and the positive plate covers the Americium. The Americium generates alpha particles. These molecules ionize the oxygen and nitrogen atoms of the air inside the chamber. What actually takes place is nothing more than a bumping off of electrons. As the electrons are knocked off, the air atom becomes positively charged and draws to the negative plate, while the electron gets attracted to the positive plate. Meanwhile, the electric circuits inside the detector senses if there are no disruptions to the pattern.
As air passes freely in the chamber, it gets ionised. As fume moves into the chamber, the ionisation procedure is disrupted and consequently ignites the electrical horn to sound off.
Photoelectrical Detectors
Photoelectric detectors arent used as mostly because they arent that sensitive as most require a significant amount of fume to go off. Photoelectric detectors consist of 2 channels, one is to emit light and the other discovers it. If fume molecules are present in the air, this will interfere with the signal and the alarm goes off.
Many of the alarm systems are tied altogether and if one becomes ignited or goes off, the rest goes off likewise. In most cases as well, water sprinklers are also tied to the alarm sensors so that once these goes off, water is mechanically sprinkled or diffused in the area.
