Rage Junks Dedicated Servers

It seems that more bad news is going to come to PC gamers. John Cormack, the brains behind game development company Id, has just announced that it will no long provide support for dedicated linux servers for its upcoming shooting game Rage. The PC gaming community has gone crazy when game developer Infinity Ward announced that it wouldn’t be supporting dedicated servers for the PC version of its Modern Warfare 2 last month. Forums were flooded with outbursts of anger with an internet petition created to move against the decision. The petition currently has about 185,000 signatures. In spite of Infinity Ward’s best efforts, the move is widely perceived as another example that the video gaming industry is dumbing down to favour those who tend to get too confused with the many buttons of gaming. But now, it seems that Infinity Ward will have another developer who will follow suit on its decision to do away with the mouse-and-keyboard setup. John Cormack himself has recently said that Id is more likely to follow the same path for its newest project game, Rage. He says that while the specifics are not yet clear, he is sure that the company is dumping the use of dedicated servers for this game.Cormack also sounded grateful for the fact that Infinity Ward has started on with the trail because now he doesn’t have to be a pioneer in the decision. He is apparently aware of the fact that their decision is not going to be a popular one. Cormack added that he is also adopting a wait and see attitude.
