Microsoft’s Smartphone Advertisement Slammed for Promoting ‘Sexting’

The advertisement for Microsoft’s new smartphone handset caused a controversy when a certain portion was criticised by a US consumer group for being possibly encouraging towards ’sexting’.

The phone, Kin is targeted at the social networking group and is scheduled to be out in the US and Europe next month and in the autumn respectively. Kin has some tough competition to face from other smartphones in the market, but the recent Kin advertisement that was broadcast in the US has already landed the product in a soup for a segment featuring in it. Microsoft has since then cut the scenes.

Some US consumer groups felt that an image in the ad, which depicts a man taking a picture of his nipples and then forwarding it to a woman, could be viewed as supporting ’sexting’. On the Consumer Reports Electronic blog, Mike Gikas wrote that the ad shows a ‘creepy’ scene where a woman is sent a picture of a man’s nipples after he clicks it from underneath his shirt with the smartphone.

Although the scene was on the screen for a very short time compared to the entire duration of the ad, Microsoft deleted the offensive matter considering the outrage it sparked in people. After doing the necessary, Microsoft even tendered an apology to those offended and said that it did not intend to encourage ’sexting’ in any way and regrets the inclusion of such matter in its ad.

It seems highly possible that those not intending to check out the Kin in stores will do so now, prompted by the recent controversy.
