Extended Working Hours can Damage Your Heart

Working overtime can increase the risk of heart problems in employees, according to new research. The study was published in the European Heart Journal recently. About 6000 civil servants were studied in Britain for the purpose of this research. A connection was found between overtime work and the higher instance of heart disease among these employees.

According to the findings of the research, employees who regularly work long hours to the tune of about 10 or more everyday increased their risk of heart disease. The risk they face is higher by about two thirds. Doctors who were involved in the study accounted for known risk factors such as smoking when they collated the statistics. It was found that those who put in 3- 4 hours of overtime a day were at a 60% higher risk of heart ailments.

The results of the study need to be analysed further before any proven link can be established between overtime and heart disease risk, said lead researcher Mianna Virtanen. She is an epidemiologist at the Institute of Occupational Health in Helsinki and University College London.

Senior Cardiac Nurse, Cathy Ross, spoke for the British Heart Foundation, which also partially funded the study. She said that the study raised questions on how work habits can affect the heart. The research did show a link between overtime and heightened risk of coronary heart disease but the reasons for increased risks were not yet clear, she said.

She also pointed to a number of factors like insufficient sleep, high blood pressure and high levels of stress, which can increase heart disease risk. These factors are critical in determining the heart condition of the employee, Ross said. The reason could also be as simple as the employee not finding the time to take care of himself.
