Rage Junks Dedicated Servers

Filed under: Gaming Hall, Technometer — admin @ 7:27 am

It seems that more bad news is going to come to PC gamers. John Cormack, the brains behind game development company Id, has just announced that it will no long provide support for dedicated linux servers for its upcoming shooting game Rage. The PC gaming community has gone crazy when game developer Infinity Ward announced that it wouldn’t be supporting dedicated servers for the PC version of its Modern Warfare 2 last month. Forums were flooded with outbursts of anger with an internet petition created to move against the decision. The petition currently has about 185,000 signatures. In spite of Infinity Ward’s best efforts, the move is widely perceived as another example that the video gaming industry is dumbing down to favour those who tend to get too confused with the many buttons of gaming. But now, it seems that Infinity Ward will have another developer who will follow suit on its decision to do away with the mouse-and-keyboard setup. John Cormack himself has recently said that Id is more likely to follow the same path for its newest project game, Rage. He says that while the specifics are not yet clear, he is sure that the company is dumping the use of dedicated servers for this game.Cormack also sounded grateful for the fact that Infinity Ward has started on with the trail because now he doesn’t have to be a pioneer in the decision. He is apparently aware of the fact that their decision is not going to be a popular one. Cormack added that he is also adopting a wait and see attitude.

Filed under: My Commerce, Technometer, Telecommunication — admin @ 8:38 am

Following on the heels of a recent YouGov survey in which T-Mobile bagged the top spot in six out of thirteen categories, a research study by independent testing house P3 Solutions has found that T-Mobile is indeed the best when it comes to guaranteeing a satisfying mobile broadband customer experience.

This is the third quarter in succession in which T-Mobile is walking away with the top spot. Interestingly, this study by P3 was commissioned by T-Mobile itself. P3 found T-Mobile to be in the lead in aspects such as web browsing speeds, and the speed and reliability of email services. Its stellar performance was not just restricted to these areas as it also recorded impressive upload speeds, at least 44 percent faster than the closest opponent.

Commenting on the results of the survey, the chief technology officer of T-Mobile UK, Emin Gurdenli said that this third consecutive success in the survey was an indication that it was doing a good job of satisfying consumers by giving them an opportunity to avail of improved network performance, which was dependable as well.

He added that these results come at a time when the company is witnessing record growth in consumer subscriptions and a 300 percent upsurge in data traffic since late 2007, when mobile broadband was first introduced in the market.

P3 formulates its results after taking into account the experience of ordinary consumers on a particular mobile network. It visits various popular websites, notes the time taken to download files of different sizes, sends emails and uses popular applications, to arrive at the final result.

Affinion Safeguards against Identity Theft

Filed under: Online Product Resources, Security Infos, Technometer — admin @ 6:27 pm

Now that prices of their commodities are cheaper than ever, identity thieves may do just about anything to cover more ground.

From $30 in 1998, an ill-gotten credit card has come to fetch for just $3 nowadays. It can even be had for as low as 40 cents. Comprehensive identity profiles, which encompass social security numbers, ATM PIN numbers, and credit information, sell for only $10 each.

Consumers’ complacency has the priciest tag, though; people still must own up to the skyrocketing costs of losing identity data.

In light of all these, identity thieves are not unknown to wait until market prices rise yet again. For instance, the infiltrators in the Montgomery Ward flap stole data as early as 2007, but only traded the data late next year. For many thieves, the mantra has been either wait-and-seeor-work-even-harder.

In 2007, thieves spirited away $8.5 million in identity information from the Fidelity National Information Services. It was a record in the history of identity theft.

The Affinion Security Center, of the eponymous conglomerate, has a first-hand vista of the underground market. On occasion, Affinion produces mock identity data, if only to identify the individuals and groups that use them. In the wake of the Montgomery Ward security compromise, Affinion was able to uncover the identities of the thieves, who were about to sell $10,000 worth of credit cards.

One of Affinion’s services leverages algorithmic sequences in computers to scour black market “forums” for compromised identities.

Hurricane and Typhoons Show Drop in Ozone Levels

Filed under: Technometer — admin @ 12:43 am

A recent study, which was conducted by the Florida State University, showed that ozone levels drop as the Hurricanes get bigger. The NASA funded study looked at readings in the upper atmosphere of 12 storms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center (NHC) which forecasts Hurricanes uses the eye to pin point the Hurricanes position and with that data a hundred mile radius was taken and the ozone was measured.

Ozone keeps out harmful sun rays know to cause cancer. When it is in the lower atmosphere we consider it pollution, as it is harmful to breath. The study showed a strong relationship with regards to ozone, air pressure and spin of hurricanes.

I propose we find a way to steer these Hurricanes over diseased areas of the ocean, such as algae blooms, because it appears the Hurricanes, suck down the upper atmosphere ozone. By doing so the ozone would be forced to the surface and kill the red tides, which kill sea life and cause dead zones. First however we must study more to find out how concentrated the ozone becomes as it is sucked into the storms system and where it goes. Once we know that we maybe able to use this incredible force of nature to take care of this looming problem of the algae blooms and red tides? It might be possible, one never knows.

Within this next decade we will be able to control Hurricanes and Typhoons in order to slightly alter their course to avoid large cities from direct hits and in doing so we may learn what other great things we can do to help other problems which plague our oceans by using the Hurricanes and Typhoons power as a friendly source of raw energy instead of destructive force which threatens our civilizations existence? Think on this.
